Question: What is the proper way of performing Wudu?
Answer: As all Muslims know that there is no prayer expect with ablution. Hence, it becomes mandatory on all Muslims to learn how to perform wudu correctly and understand its importance and study its different issues which they need to know.
Wudu consists of Obligatory actions and recommended actions. The best and most complete way of performing wudu is:
1- Intention: Before performing any act of worship, one has to make intention based upon the tradition of Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) related by Omar bin Al-Khattab;
"Every action is based upon intention and every man shall get what he has intended for" [Agreed upon]
notice: The intention is formed in the heart because this is where it is based. Thus, there is no need to pronounce the intention verbally and such act is counted as invoation in Islam which has no reward, rather it is a sin. Also, because Allah Knows all the secrets of the heart so there is no need to say it loudly.
2- Saying Bismillah: Based upon the hadith transmitted by Abu Hurairah;
"There is no prayer for the one who has no ablution and there is no ablution for the one does not utters Bismillah upon it" [Abu Dawud, Ibn Maja, tirmidhi & Ahmed]
3- Washing the hands three times: based upon ahadith reported by Abdullah bin Zayd and Humran from Uthmaan.
4- Gargling and sniffing: the water from right hand with one scoup and then existing them with left hand, doing that thrice with three separate scoups of water. Based upon the hadith related by Abdullah bin Zayd.
He should try to make the water reach far end of the nose except in the state of fasting. It is not recommended to do that whilst fasting rather, he should just sniff the water as normal.
5- Washing the face: from one ear to the other ear and from where the hair grows on the forehead all the way down to his chin and whatever hangs of his beard. If the beard is thick then he has to just wash the outside and if the hair are thin, exposing the skin of the face underneath then he has to wash both the beard and skin together.
6- Washing the left & right arm: including the elbows. Many people when they reach this part, because their hands are already wet, they wash the arms upto the elbows and leave out the hands. This wudu is unacceptable and will be counted as void. Washing the hands in the begining is only a sunnah, but washing them with arm is obligatory. The hand makesup the arm so both needs to be washed properly at this stage - even if the hands are already wet.
7- Wiping over the head: once by weting the fingers and spreading them across the head, covering the entire or most of the area. It begins from the front and goes to the back and then back to the front again. There is no evidence of wiping the neck and scholars deemed that as inovation.
Then, with the same water wipe the inner part of the ear with index finger and outside of the ear with thumbs.
8- Washing the feet: starting with right upto the ankels. It is also recommended to wash between the toe fingers.
9- Pronouncing the Dua: after completing the ablution, the perosn should make the Dua:
Ash Hadu an laa ilaha illAllahu wahdahu laa shari kalahu wa ash hadu anna muhammed ab-duhu wa rasooluhu...Allahumma ijalni mina ta'wabeen waja alni minal muta-tah-hireen
I bear witness that there is no one worthy to be worshipped except Allah, who is alone without any partners and i further bear witness that muhammed is His slave and messenger. O Allah make me amongst those who make repentence and make me amongst those who purify themselves.
